Hypnosis for the Heart
Friday, 01 July 2011 00:00

Hypnosis_for_the_heartVolunteer clinical hypnotherapists from all over Australia offer two free consultations to people recovering from a cardiac event. The offer is open to all cardiac patients and is part of a project run by Hypnotherapists Enhancing Life for People (HELP), an Australia-wide, non-profit community service aimed at assisting people in need. “Our hypnotherapists are all accredited clinical members of professional associations and are bound by a code of ethics”, says HELP’s founder Leon W. Cowen.

In 2004-05, 18 per cent (approximately 3.5 million) of the Australian population had a long-term cardiovascular condition, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. While improvements in medical care and treatments have reduced death rates from coronary heart disease, for many people, stress and lifestyle patterns are among the risk factors known to contribute to both the development of cardiovascular disease and to recovery.

There is a growing body of evidence in Australia and overseas that mind-body interventions, such as hypnotherapy, are effective in restructuring behaviours and reducing stress, blood pressure and resting heart rate. Research also suggests that including relaxation techniques may significantly reduce cardiac events during the cardiac rehabilitation phase.

To find a volunteer clinical hypnotherapist near you, go to the HELP website at http://www.help.asn.au/directory.html and arrange for a free consultation.
