In the last edition of LivingNow, we saw an excellent article showing the unhappiness that comes from wanting... there is a never-ending desire for more once you believe that you can find happiness from more ‘things’... If we find our sense of meaning or sense of self through the things we have or own then we miss out on the higher purpose of this life, which is to re-establish our connection with the Ultimate Source of our True Selves ... our True Source if you like. More accurately, the only thing we should truly ‘want’ in this life is to return to that Source.
From the perspective of our limited brain, the question is: what does THAT look like? It’s just a concept really for the brain, but from the heart perspective, it is the very meaning of existence that we can only understand by connecting and opening our heart to our Creator.
If we believe in a higher purpose, we can participate in life quite differently.... not from a position of less, needing more... but from the view-point that we already HAVE the best. Our attitude in this paradigm, says: we can’t possibly know what is best for us because we dont know what’s going on! It’s quite possible that there are unpleasant and challenging things that need to be in our lives in order for us to let go of the blocks and limitations that separate us from each other and our Source.
The law of attraction, made popular through The Secret, works essentially like this:... basically you think about what you want ... believe you actually HAVE it and it comes to you (manifests) in some mysterious way because you have the reflected state necessary for that thing you want to be in your life. If we change the first step, perhaps we can unlock a much bigger secret: so instead of thinking about what we want, we can start believing we already have everything we could ever need! The next step requires that we have to have the appropriate attitude towards those situations, events, etc, that are already in our life: essentially an attitude of gratitude. WHATEVER those things are. This is the most difficult part. We have to believe we are being looked after and being helped, that the Creator (beyond anything we could ever understand) is taking care of us despite what the physical situations around us are telling us. It’s only then that things will change... for the much much better!
One of the main reasons that we don’t live our lives in this way is because there are a million arguments to tell us that we are NOT being looked after, that life is random etc. As a result, our attitude is one of wanting ‘proof’ of some Divine Source (beyond anything we could understand) BEFORE we will believe. How about we try the other approach? It’s called Faith. When we have faith, we firstly admit that though we cant understand what's happening, we accept that we are being taken care of, but have yet to realise that (and therefore it has not yet manifested physically). Perhaps it is US that is blocking the love, the support? Perhaps we are not accepting the help and support that is being given every moment? Think about all the problems that are in our lives, and straight away you can see and feel the attitude we have. Through our very actions, we show that we dont trust that things will turn out for the best. Through our actions, we compound our problems, showing what we really believe in – our problems! That busy-ness with our problems is one of the ways we block the help that would otherwise sort out much of the mess we get ourselves into.
The underlying strategy for this process to unfold requires that we build our connection to Source through our heart. Otherwise we are simply trying to apply a formula and it’s very much a 'mind over matter' approach. Our will gets in the way unless we strengthen our heart. However, once we make that connection through our heart, our trust, belief and faith will improve automatically – and then we can surrender much better to what is simply happening in our lives... not understanding the mystery but being at peace with it.
Do this properly and it increasingly becomes hard to believe that we are NOT loved and helped every moment of our lives.
