Leonie Blackwell designs all her courses incorporating her academic background with practical experience and knowledge. She began as a secondary school teacher in a socially disadvantaged technical school. She completed a Graduate Diploma in Student Welfare and became the student counsellor at the school. Through this she became involved in a local homeless youth agency, taking on roles with the management committee and as a volunteer support person with service users.
