Some of the world’s leading business minds attribute their success to using their intuition. As Oprah puts it, “My business skills have come from being guided by my intuition.” Donald Trump has said, “I’ve built a multi-billion-dollar empire by using my intuition”, and even Bill Gates has stated, “You cannot ignore your intuition.”

When I was writing my book, Living Greatness: A Practical Guide to Living an Enlightened Life, at one point I was short of ideas and felt as though I had become stuck. I had a vision of what I wanted this book to be in its final form, but many things were beyond my control. I tuned into my intuition for assistance. After 15 minutes, a flash of inspiration came into my mind; it was Jack Canfield, the legendary bestselling author of the book Chicken Soup for the Soul (with more than 150 million copies sold). Trusting this guidance, I acted on it immediately, and within the space of a few weeks, not only had I made contact with Jack Canfield, but he was happy to co-author Living Greatness with me. He unconditionally supported my work by writing an excellent Foreword.

Some people refer to intuition as the gut feeling and it also means following the guidance of your heart. At a physical level, intuition is associated with the pineal gland, located near the centre of the brain. One of the most commonly used methods for tapping into your intuition is quieting your mind through a process of meditation. To develop intuition, it is important to learn to switch off the mental noises in the mind to allow peace, balance, and clarity to permeate the spirit. Many executives and top leaders make it a natural part of their daily routine to meditate; it is not just the practice of spiritual seekers and hippies. I recently learned that Hollywood superstars like Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman make it a daily habit to meditate. Intuition has to be developed through regular practice, just like building strong muscles. This takes time, patience, and persistence. Be progressive in your learning and see this as a process rather than a destination. Soon it will become second nature, and you will be following your intuition and applying its wisdom to your daily life and business practices.

We all have it

Intuition goes way beyond the very limited faculties of human intelligence. We have within us a strange little fellow called the gut feeling. When we adopt a genuine belief in this faculty and the confidence to follow those beliefs, we have a powerful ally to help us through life, successfully.

Success begins in the mind. So does failure. So does all else, and the intuition helps us to overcome the blocks to that success so eagerly sought, so hard won, so easily lost.

Intuition is a learnable skill. It isn’t the sole right of certain people who ‘just have it’.

Some can manifest these skills naturally, yet we all have it, but we don’t all believe that we have it. Some even fear it and assign it to the realms of evil.

The benefits of using the intuition are many – it saves time – lots of time, it’s a valuable tool for establishing far-sighted planning, it allows room for expansive ideas to develop systematically, it encourages a larger vision, it creates avenues to express the vision, it defines communication of the vision, it warns you of dangers, and it is a personal development tool.

Much more than a gut feeling

For years I have been guided by my intuition which I used to think of as a ‘gut’ feeling. I now realise it is much more than that and in fact it isn’t from the ‘gut’ at all. When we are living authentically and on purpose we develop certain ‘muscles’ that inform us of the energy around us and we can react or respond to those energies in ways that serve us or not. We can make a choice based on that energy.

So in essence, what I am saying is that intuition is a form of energy that we all have. We also have the power to strengthen that energy by constant awareness and application. You may remember a time when you were shopping and something seemed to jump out at you from the shelves and you ignored it only to find out when you got home that you really needed that item to cook the dish you were planning for dinner. That is a simplified version of not following your intuition. Begin to practise using your intuition on a daily basis and watch how things begin to change for you.

It’s not your imagination

I lose count of the number of times I tell clients not to negate their intuition. Intuition is not your imagination. Every time you think that it is, you are nullifying the wonderful intuitive talent that you already have. So many people make light of their gut feelings that would perhaps help them clinch that deal or protect them from going into a troublesome venture.

Intuition is your inner subconscious higher mentality (self) telling you that something is either good for you or bad or giving you an insight into something you need to know which you may not have known if you simply relied on your conscious, perceptive mind which is always turning outwards to the world.

As for developing it, one of the key ways is meditation – turning the mind inwards and learning to see with that inner being rather than the world we think we see. From that centre we can use intuition to build a better life for ourselves and those around us. It takes meditation, introspection, belief, faith and humility to listen to something other than the chatter of our conscious egos but the capability exists in every one of us. So what are you listening to?

Soul’s voice – your intuition

Did you know that in primitive times we had to rely on our intuition to survive? If you give it some thought, intuition is a primitive defence mechanism communicated through soul. Today all sorts of alarms, beliefs, attitudes and mechanical devices replace intuition.

Just think for a moment about intuition and you will find intuitive data comes into your mind from the universe; it comes freely without any judgment. Your mind deciphers the information to make sense of it, you then move the information through your thinking and feeling faculties (faculties corrupted by eons of rituals, beliefs, doctrines and attitudes). Your thinking mind identifies and classifies the information and assigns a feeling to that data to give it value or worth (Robertson 1992). In other words, intuition is an activity acted upon by your brain, and this is why so many who trust intuition misinterpret what they sense, see or feel.

Intuition is soul’s voice guiding and advising you. It is exactly what it sounds like ‘inner tuition’ to what is truth.

To ascertain which thoughts are intuitive and to learn to develop awareness of intuition, the answer is simple. You don’t have to spend thousands on courses, meditate for endless hours, be of a certain persuasion, be spiritual or religious, and you don’t have to eat certain foods or exercise in a certain way to be intuitive. You just have to trust and listen. I think the big secret in identifying intuition is ‘thoughtless information’. In other words it enters consciousness before you think of it. This is why dream interpretation is so important and powerful; dreams like intuition are in essence unpolluted truths.

Trust, and soon you will realise intuition is a natural part of who you are, it is soul’s voice, communicating universal truth about that which is all.
