Reader round-table — Perception
Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder

A number of years ago my family were holidaying in Thailand. We took a boat trip to some islands for snorkelling. At one particular island we donned our masks, snorkels and flippers and all got into the water. We looked around expecting to see clear water, colourful coral and tropical fish, as the brochures had pictured. Instead we were confronted with murky water, dead coral and an amazing amount of litter. Plastic bags, coke cans, bits of rubbish everywhere. I was upset and angry about paying good money for a very disappointing experience but quickly decided to use one of the plastic bags I found floating in the water to gather up whatever rubbish I could and take it  back to the boat. I simply decided to love that little island bay and with each bit of litter I collected I felt better and better. It began to feel like a treasure hunt. My children even joined me. I was one of the last people to get back onto the boat since I was having such a good time. Fellow snorkellers were angry and disappointed. I loved it. I was pleased and rewarded by my ability to alter my perception of the experience.

For a long time now, I have believed, and taught, that the next step in human evolution is to master the art of choosing our perceptions. That means consciously choosing your thoughts and your emotions. How much happier will we be when we can all do that?

By the way, it was only after our boat tour moved on to a much more beautiful location that our tour guide told us that little bay had been badly affected by the recent tsunami. Like so many other places and people on Earth, it badly needed lots of love.

Does perception have meaning?
Monday, 01 November 2010 00:00

Verena Cunningham

Perceptions are all mind made. What I perceive as good today may turn out to be bad tomorrow. When perceptions create emotions and reactions they have become our truth. What if perceptions have no meaning and are merely observed as what is? When the mind gets involved and we give meaning to the perception, emotions arise and reactions follow. How about perceiving everything just as it is without meaning? How would you feel if you were the observing witness of what happens around you? The mind won’t have it though. Habitually it will perceive in opposites, good, bad, acceptable, unacceptable and so on. How about just observing the thinking? You after all are the one who is aware of the thoughts and perceptions. When awareness is present the mind is defeated. Remember the mind separates, awareness unites.

Glass half full. Glass half empty

From somebody who perpetually perceives the glass as half full, I have often wondered out of curiosity about those who observe with equal conviction that the glass is in fact half empty! After all why not choose the wonderful feelings of abundance, safety and gratitude which accompany the positive observation of our physical environment?

The only thing which comes between you and an event, person, experience, circumstance or life is the meaning you attach to it – in other words, how you choose to perceive it. Perception lies between joy and discontentment, love and loathing, feelings of wholeness and emptiness, achievement and failure, forgiveness and illness.

Manage your perception so it allows you to feel good, powerful and joyous – your true state.

Know how to look

A life changing revolution in how people perceive is only possible when we know how to look. You are not only looking with your eyes but also with your mind. To see anything completely we are involving the totality of our mind, of our heart, of our nerves, of our eyes, of our ears. We spend our life using a small portion of our mind and to access the vast field of the mind there must be a radical change in the fragmentation of the mind; otherwise no revolution.

Perception and NLP

Roberta Faddoul

The following suggest how our perceptions are shaped:

1. Presuppositions of NLP – ‘Perception is projection’ – what you see outside of you is actually inside of you.

2. Alfred Korzybski said in 1933, “People operate out of their maps and not out of sensory experience.” So, if you have prosperity thinking, you will see prosperity and abundance all around you, and if you think deprivation then you will find that everywhere. It is not about right or wrong it is just how we operate. Remember – is the glass half full or half empty?

So pay attention because your immune system is eavesdropping on your internal dialogue, e.g., if you say “The weather has changed and that means I’ll get a cold”, then you will probably get a cold. However, if the thought of sickness comes in and you say, “I’m okay. Thanks for the quick visit. Try next door – they might be interested”, then you most likely won’t get sick. If you always talk about being sick, you catch everything. It’s your reality, not everyone else’s reality.

William Blake said, “If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear as it is, infinite”. So don’t close yourself off to the possibilities that are infinite. Clean your vision of perception and see miracles unfold ENJOY!
