The day I learned that the unique way I look at the world is valid was miraculous to say the least. It may sound bizarre to anyone who was brought up in a functional family, but I thought that I had to justify why I saw things the way I did, especially if the way I saw them differed from the way you saw them.

I had spent my life trying to convince others that the way I saw things was right. And that the way they saw things was wrong. I didn’t know it was okay just to see things the way I did.

This revelation – that I am allowed my own perceptions, changed my life forever. I no longer needed to spend so much energy trying to convince. I could just say, “This is my perception! I know it isn’t the way you are looking at this situation, but this is how I see it”. The arguments stopped. I could acknowledge myself and I could acknowledge the other person. We were both ‘right’ and no one was wrong. How wonderful! How exciting! Who would have thought it was so easy!

It is great to see different points of view, to expand my knowledge and to grow, but, until I am ready to do that, this is my perception today and it’s okay!
