You’ve no doubt heard of the phrase that our brain is like a great computer.  However, I liken it more to a remote control, for it has a:

  • rewind button that replays experiences – both negative and positive
  • forward button that tries to speed up future outcomes
  •  a selection of channels to choose more dramatic story lines and endings,

all of which keep you from living the present moment and inevitably cause suffering.

So how can you put an end to this and live in the present moment to change your life profoundly? Select the stop button! Change your perception of yourself and your relationship to the world.

A simple and effective tool I commonly suggest to clients for changing their life is summarised in this diagram.

Figure 1.1 – Change your life by changing your perception

Consider two people who might react in totally different ways to the same situation, e.g., being rudely spoken to by a shopkeeper.

The first person gets hurt and angered about the disrespect and being made to feel small. Their mood is coloured by their experience and they replay the event repeatedly, subconsciously linking it to their own self-worth.

The second person sees the shopkeeper as having a bad day. He/she recognises the inappropriate rudeness but does not attach his/her self-worth to the situation and gets on with life.

The key difference is the perception held by each person about themselves and their relationship to their environment. The world is a mirror of your internal self. How you experience life is controlled by the perception you hold of yourself.

Here’s a simple exercise. Next time you find yourself mulling over something that has happened or may happen, try to:

1.    Recognise the remote control in your head

2.    Ask yourself:

‘What event am I replaying over and over again?’

‘Am I trying to create different possible endings to my story?’

3.    Identify the emotion/s you are feeling

4.    Think back 15 seconds before the emotion and identify what thoughts you were holding about yourself or someone/something. There lies a big clue about the perception you hold.  With awareness you have the power to choose and change.

To change your perception and experience of life, refer back to fig 1.1.
